Willempje was the older sister of Jane De Bruin, Arie’s wife. Peter J. and Willempje were members of Third Reformed Church of Pella, when they were first married.
They initially farmed in Black Oak Township. In 1896 they moved to a farm near Peoria. Peter J. and Wilma joined the Peoria Christian Reformed Church, where he would serve as both a deacon and an elder.
Later they purchased 211 acres from Antonie Vermeer on March 3, 1914 in Richland Township, Mahaska Countynear Peter J.’s brother Arie and his sister Gysbertje Pothoven.
The 1915 Iowa State Census records provide some idea of the farming operation in 1914. Peter J. owned his farm. He had no debt. The farm was valued at $38,000. He listed an income of $1000. He gave his religious affiliation as Christian Reformed.
