Their Final Resting Place

Pieter Sr. and Gisbertje, and most of the Martinus De Jong generation are buried in Black Oak Cemetery, near their farms.

Arie and Jane and some of their children are buried in the Peoria Cemetery.

To the right is a picture of the grave of Grietje De Jong in Black Oak Cemetery. The gravestones of Grietje, Albert, John, Martinus and his mother Gisbertje are of similar shape and size. Although this one has the top broken off, all are in the shape of an obelisk (like the Washington Monument) and are made of limestone. I am certain they are the original stones. Unfortunately, being made of limestone, they are also susceptible to erosion by rain. Several of them are now difficult to read.

The most unusual gravestone is the one shared by Martinus and his mother, Gisbertje.   Gisbertje’s inscription is on the front of the stone and Martinus’s inscription is on the side.
